Hostage Data, The Danger of Free Web Hosting.

I don’t want to sound unappreciative of the free web hosting I’ve had since July of 2001. But, the following should serve as a warning if you are hosting your data on a free host.

TechSupport: Hello! Thank you for contacting FreeHost. In order to help you as quickly and efficiently as possible, please provide your FreeHost user name and the password for account verification purposes.

motownmutt: Hi TechSupport, my username is motownmutt

TechSupport: How may I help you?

motownmutt: For months now, I’ve been getting ASP 0221 errors. I am unable to edit or save files. Every time I ask for help, they ask me to log out and back in, and then the problem comes back. Is there a solution to this problem that will enable me to continue using your services?

TechSupport: Can you send me a link to that error?

motownmutt: Active Server Pages error ‘ASP 0221’ Invalid @ Command directive /Error/Error.aspx, line 1 The specified ‘RegiHost TagPrefix=”Free1″ Namespace=”FreeHost.ErrorLib” Assembly=”FreeHost.ErrorLib, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=a29d0809d667f569″ ‘ option is unknown or invalid. Microsoft VBScript runtime error ‘800a000d’ Type mismatch /FileManagerEditInclude.asp, line 107

TechSupport: Honestly the only recommendation i can give you is to upgrade your account and get moved to a different server.

motownmutt: Why would I upgrade my account when this one performs so poorly?

motownmutt: I don’t mean to sound unappreciative. I’m just frustrated.

TechSupport: becasue the server you are on is the one with your type of package and the free accounts so it gets alot of traffic.

motownmutt: Is there a way to tell how much traffic is related to my particular account? That would be useful to know if I was deciding if an upgrade was worth the cost.

TechSupport: Not with the current package you have no.

motownmutt: Ok, I have one other question. Since I have asp pages stored on the server, I have no way to display the code, i.e. I have no way to archive the data I have stored. Can you recommend a solution to archiving my data?

TechSupport: No way of viewing your data you mean?

motownmutt: right, I can’t View source of an asp page, and saving the file does not save the underlying code, so all of my code on asp pages is lost to me at this point.

TechSupport: I don’t know of a way for you to archive the data. Not sure apart from storing it on the server.

motownmutt: It is on the server, but I can’t edit it on the server, or save it locally to edit it. I appreciate your time, I’m just really frustrated that I can’t access my data in any reliable, consistent, and useful way.

TechSupport: i do apologize for the inconvenience.

motownmutt: That’s okay, it’s not your fault, I’m sure. As a free service, I expected some limitations, but am surprised that my data would become completely inaccessible to me.

TechSupport: The only way you would be able to view would be in file manager but then we go back to square one.

motownmutt: Right, that’s where I am. still on square one. I saved the files on the server, and now I can’t access the files. Thank you for your help. It seems there’s not much we can do at this point.

TechSupport: i do apologize. Sorry i could not be more help.

motownmutt: It’s okay. Have a good one.

TechSupport: You to
